A double block and bleed valve is often used for a more positive isolation of a process fluid from other equipment. It normally consists of 2 block valves and a bleed valve, which apart from being hugely space saving can also save on time during installation and maintenance process.
When the process fluid is feeding the downstream equipment, the isolation valves 1 & 2 are opened and bleed valve 3 is closed.
When the downstream equipment is to be isolated from the process fluid, the isolation valves 1 & 2 are closed and bleed valve 3 is opened.
This is achieved by two Ball, Gate, Globe, Needle, etc valves placed back to back with a third "isolate" valve in the centre cavity.
